Market shopping week #6…. A fridge full of goodies
Week #6: I spent $60 and really stocked the fridge. Veggies, fruits, seltzer, wraps, crackers, granola bars, and a yogurt.
History is at the end of the post.
I don’t want to ruin the surprise of all the goodies in my fridge, so no pics, but there are lots of yummy things in there! I tend to go to the market on Monday nights and then prepare a bunch of foods for the week. Tonight I made:
-a soup (will share it tomorrow)
-a batch of steel cut oats made with water + cinnamon
-a roasted red pepper
-a baked sweet potato
-a baked butternut squash
-washed, peeled and cut 3 cucumbers
This way when it comes time to make my dinners or to pack my lunch for the next day everything is ready to go.
History:
Week #1 I spent $20, and used a lot of the stuff in my cabinets
Week #2 I spent $30, which included nothing too expensive, I guess I just bought more.
Week #3 I spent, er, $70!!!!! I couldn’t believe it. And, I went back last night for a couple of forgotten items and a new mop which I never should have bought from the market, and spent another $30. Ew.
Week #4 I spend $70 again. PB is coming again this weekend + I had to stock up on some long lasting items, and well, it just ended up that way.
Week #5 I spent, get this, $0. I am trying to clear out my fridge of last week’s goodies + clear the pantry a little to make room for this fall’s goodies. Also, I went out for dinner last night with my friends and will probably go out tonight with my dad, bro and sis, so that is 2 meals I don’t need to account for. **I ended up spending about $10 on bananas and yogurt halfway through the week**

That’s pretty impressive! What a good idea to prep your food for the week ahead of time. I’ve made oatmeal, boiled eggs, chopped fresh veggies, etc., but I’ve never thought of roasting my vegetables all at once.

I love this experiment and am so curious as to how this week will pan out. I have a question about the steel cut oats. Do you parcook a whole batch, and then cook smaller batches during the week? B/c I love steel cut oats but often run out of time to make them. would love to hear your method!

Laura- Roasting the veggies all at once makes it so easy to use them all week for pastas, sides, soups etc!
alexandra’s kitchen: I am answering it the long way in this morning’s post, but the short answer is that I just cook the whole batch at once and then reheat portions as needed with a bit of water (or milk if you like) to rehydrate them. They taste just as good as when I make them right then.

I love the shopping experiment. I recently put myself on a budget for grocery shopping and find myself amazed how much I was spending each week for one person.

This is great! I really need to do this. These past few weeks I’ve just been stocking up on good stuff and ridding the house of not-so-good stuff. Prior to this, I was spending about $30/wk for a family of 3!

wow shawna that is really incredible. would you consider sharing some tips on how to spend so little for a family of 3? maybe even guest blog about it one day? i would love to know and share them!

Sure, I’ll blog about it one day, once I get a decent budget down for clean eating. My $30 budget (and most of the time it was more like $25/wk) was buying a lot of processed stuff. Not cookies and candy, but instant rices and whatever was on sale and had coupons at the time.
I’m sure now that I’m eating less meat, I’ll be able to come up with a decent budget. My daughter is only 2, and she loves real food, so I just give her a bit of what I’m having. DH is another story – he has to have meat with every meal.
Once I have something down, I’ll post about it.
