Kelly's Cake Off for a Cause
Sometimes, you can have your cake and eat it too.
Kelly Ripa and Electrolux hosted an incredible event to benefit the Ovarian Cancer Research Fund.
TLC’s “Cake Boss”, Buddy Valastro, and two members of his team, Frankie and Remy, were present to help the teams decorate their cakes. 15 Foodbuzz bloggers, myself included, participated in this cake decorating event in New York’s Chelsea Market this week.
Before the space became full of fondant rolling machines, we learned a bit about the Electrolux induction oven. According to Kelly Ripa, this oven makes it much easier for her to make mac n cheese for her soon upon request, as the water in the pasta pot boils in just a few minutes. The oven is any cook’s dream. Not only is it 70% more energy efficient than gas, but it is more responsive than gas or electric. The heat can be adjusted instantly to achieve a quick boil.
When the presentation was complete, each team of three had approximately one hour to decorate Carlo’s Bakery cakes in the theme we were given. Team Mod squad, which included Josie of Daydreamer Desserts, Tina of Carrots ‘n Cake, and myself, worked hard with Frankie of Carlo’s Bakery to decorate our cake with a purple fondant base and beautiful psychedelic flowers.
The event was a dream for me as it took something fun in the kitchen (cake decorating) and used it to bring awareness to a great cause (Ovarian Cancer Research Fund) in a great atmosphere. It is really important to take time out of your day to support causes you believe in. One person can make a difference, and if each person takes just a few minutes out of their day to help, we can make a great impact.
Buddy and Frankie made me miss my family in Rhode Island, as they were so warm and friendly. I loved hearing their stories about their families, working at the bakery, and all of the exciting things Buddy has in store in the next year.
Frankie and I:
Buddy signing the back of my Carlo’s Bakery t-shirt. It was the first time I have ever had anyone sign anything!
Buddy & I. By the end of the day, I felt like we were all friends.
I may have been a bit boastful about our gorgeous cake at the event, but I couldn’t help it. Just look at it!
All of the other teams had beautiful cakes too.
Now that our hard work is done, it is your turn! Please visit kelly-confidential.com to vote for your favorite cake ..hint, hint: the MOD SQUAD cake! Electrolux will be donating $1 to the OCRF for every vote made in the month of February. Thank you in advance for your votes! You may vote every day!

Thank you so much Stephanie!!! You are too sweet.
Your cake is beautiful and the event sounded so fun! I’ve never worked with fondant…was it difficult to learn?
Thanks! Actually, it was quite easy to work with fondant, especially once they taught us how to fix our mistakes. I am curious to try it again at home and will be sure to write about how it goes!
I just hate that it tastes like nothing!
Wow! I’m so impressed. I lived in Philadelphia last year and took a cake decorating course in the Italian Market (Fante’s- great for kitchen gadgets if you’re interested) and none of my cakes ever came close to yours!! You did a fantastic job. I love to hear about your life in Philly. It’s an incredible city and I miss it dearly. I lived in Dockside Apartments on Columbus Blvd. I hope to share some great meals from there on my new blog.
Take care!

We just got all new Electrolux appliances for our kitchen. Not sure if we have the induction cooktop though. It’s probably fancier than we could afford. I’ll find out next week! π
I loooove fun events that also benefit a good cause. You are right; if everyone participates in some cause they believe in the world would be a much better place! Congrats on such a fun and inspirational day.
