The Spotted Pig

The best New York restaurants, in my opinion, are the ones that sit quietly in their spot, beckoning for you to join them in their warm dining room. They don’t necessarily stand out on the street, but the minute your foot steps through the entrance, you are transformed to a new world.

The Spotted Pig is one such place. I had no idea what to expect when I arrived there with the Kelly’s Cake Off group (please vote for the MOD SQUAD cake!!). When we walked in, however, the smells of delicious home cooked food and the sight of a crowd greeted us. You know a restaurant is good when the dining room and bar is completely packed on a Monday night- the night directly after the Super Bowl.

Our cocktail hour was upstairs in a beautiful rustic room set with bright yellow flowers. April Bloomfield, the head chef and part owner of The Spotted Pig, which is located in Manhattan’s Meatpacking District, was there along with a few members of her staff to demonstrate a few dishes using her Electrolux appliances. They also prepared some tasty treats for us to enjoy.

On the menu:

• Devils on Horseback
• Onion & Thyme Tarts with Ricotta
• Chicken Liver Parfait with Onion Marmalade
• Cheese Beignets with Smoked Paprika
• Seared Beef Filet with Horseradish & Arugula
• Hummus with Feta, Olives & Flatbread
• Broccoli Rabe & Roasted Garlic Frittata
• Crispy Duck Confit with Cabbage
• Six Root Vegetable Soup

Watching food bloggers in action always makes me laugh. There were cameras everywhere!

I tried almost everything, including duck (for the first time).

The star of the night was definitely the Six Root Vegetable Soup. April demonstrated this recipe for us, and I believe we will be getting a copy of the recipe!

It was absolutely delicious and simple and reminded me of sitting by a fire on a cold winter night.

After our fabulous time at The Spotted Pig, all of the bloggers and Ryan from Foodbuzz went to the bar in our hotel for drinks and a fun exchange. Each person brought a regional food goodie. I had some issues finding something since my favorite local chocolates were nowhere to be found and we were hit with a pretty bad snowstorm. I finally found some great whole wheat pretzels from Uncle Jerry’s that came from Lancaster, PA! Everyone brought really cool gifts, and it was a great way to spend the time!
