Nick’s on Broadway
I must pay proper tribute to our favorite Rhode Island breakfast spot- Nick’s On Broadway. I love this place so much that this is my third post about it! (first, and second). When I lived in Rhode Island I made a big mistake by not insisting we go to Nick’s for breakfast every single Saturday and Sunday. Instead, we went every other weekend or so…. yes, we are addicted.
While I love to host breakfasts (I make a mean breakfast strata, and even better home fries) nothing beats going out to a nice brunch spot to satisfy that craving. Nick’s on Broadway has a great brunch menu, with lots of healthy options. According to their Twitter bio, Nick’s is a “modern american restaurant emphasizing on fresh, local, humble, straightforward, integrity driven food + good atmosphere.”
I do agree.
The open kitchen concept keeps the place constantly jumping with energy, and the line is always out the door. I prefer to sit in the bar where I can watch the chef direct the staff in a kind, methodical way. It is almost like watching a group dancing perfectly together.
We arrive on the first sunny Saturday for months to find the place jammed as usual. We enjoy a mimosa with friends we run into while waiting for our table. The juice is fresh, and the drink quenches our thirst. Three seats at the bar open up, and we can’t wait any longer. We sit at the bar and immediately we are in awe. Watching the open kitchen is like watching a beautiful dance performance. We place our orders (2 eggs sunny side up with fruit and dry mutligrain for me, eggs benedict for my dad, and seared tuna salad for PB) and watch, mesmerized. Chef asks one of his team members for more honey; it appears within seconds. Later, he requests more fresh parsley and water; again, it appears in seconds. The staff clearly respects Chef, and he respects them. They all work together seamlessly in the small kitchen, and it is a joy to watch.
We were giddy with excitement! (Sorry for the blurry photo)
Finally, our mouths salivating after seeing beautiful creations appear one after the other, our food arrives.
It. is. Perfect.
To me, the beauty of a great restaurant is taking simple ingredients and knowing how to make them shine. A simple dish of eggs, toast, and fruit is transformed into a delectable creation. The eggs are salted just right, the toast just toasty enough, and the fruit fresh and crisp. Every dish is like that at Nick’s.
Now, if only they opened a location in Philadelphia….
Nick’s on Broadway is located at 500 Broadway Providence, RI 02909.
You make me feel bad for not having been yet, but with food like that I need to go check it out!
Try Sabrina’s in Philly!
@Melissa, YES! I love Sabrina’s! We live in the Art Museum area so we go to the one on Spring Garden now and again, but I really like the one on Christian street more! Thanks!!

@jenn, Yes it is! With grilled bread topped with pesto on the side, and lots of fresh veggies hiding underneath the tuna… I may have had food envy a bit!
