  1. That’s a good tip from me! I didn’t know I shared it πŸ™‚

  2. Fabulous tips, my dear! I agree with your many pros and cons!

I tend to split my grocery buying between Reading Terminal and Trader Joe’s.. The cons about TJ’s is it has a limited baking selection. Which then leads me to fulfill my baking shopping list at Whole Foods!

  3. i am the same way with those pet peeves! i think that’s totally normal…has to be… πŸ˜‰

I could have written your pet peeves about myself! I hate when my apple or peaches get dropped into the bottom of the bag, or when my bread some how makes it into the bag with the canned goods, even when I made sure to put them at opposite ends of the conveyor belt when I was unloading my cart. There should be some type of training for grocery clerks on how to handle different type of foods.

Keep an eye out at the Wegman’s bakery for a little old lady hanging out there…..it’s probably my 95 year old grandmother. πŸ˜‰ She just looooooves their bakery!

I do one big trip a month down to that ShopRite – mainly because of price and convenience. Target next door for toiletries and apartment stuff and both can be done in one trip. And then throughout the month I just have a smaller trip or two to the Reading Terminal or TJs (especially convenient from work).

  6. i’ve got to start limiting the numbers of boxes of things we open… i have been trying to decrease our meat-based dinners but do get a little resistance from my husband… i guess it is a fun “challenge” to keep making vegetarian dinners that he will be happy with

  7. Oh my gosh I hate when the bagger/cashier handles the produce roughly too! A huge pet peeve of mine.

  8. I load my groceries the same way!! And then get frustrated when they take things out of order! By the way, use your Rhodey Girl Tests bag all the time when shopping!!

  9. I love grocery shopping! I go to the Whole Foods at University Heights usually once over the weekend and once during midweek. I find it fun to buy things and think of how to cook them. Maybe that’s lame, but it’s tasty πŸ™‚

@Evan Thomas, I miss that Whole Foods! That was my very first Whole Foods and the one I used to go to all the time in college.

Everyone knew me by name in there since I went almost every day!

  10. Totally there with your quirks althoug I find at the WF in Plymouth Meeting they are REALLY good with packing up my goods. I DEFINITELY have ‘market rage’ when there are people in my way. Happens a lot at WF at the beginning of the year when people are pledging to eat healthier and reading all the ingredients on the packages.

I also have a particular way I like to organize my groceries on the conveyor belt. Recently my grocery store has started having employees come help unload the cart and it drives me bonkers! They just come over and start throwing things on the conveyor belt all willy nilly. I’ve finally gotten the courage to say, “I’m all set. Thanks!”

@Lauren at KeepItSweet, My boyfriend was very hesitant when I started decreasing the amount of meat in our meals, but he will ALWAYS try something. To my surprise he has found most of my veggie meals fulfilling in the same way that a meat meal is the key is to make sure there is a balance between protein, veggie and healthy grains.

It’s so interesting to learn about other peoples shopping habits! I love to grocery shop, but I try to meal plan for the week on the weekends then do my grocery trip usually on Saturday or Sunday. I usually get the boyfriends thoughts/cravings that he is having and browse my bookmarked pages for the week to create our menu. When we first moved to San Francisco I tried your method and we either ended up spending twice as much money at the store or went out to eat all the time so for us having a set menu with some flexibility works better for us.

I work from home as well so I try to eat the same thing for lunch each week or else I snack all day or go buy lunch and end up making unhealthy choices. Your grocery store quirks are almost identical to mine I was cracking up because I thought I was the only crazy person out there!

  14. I am the same way! Grocery shopping is my favorite chore… in fact, I’m not even sure I’d call it a chore. It’s almost a hobby!

I’m kind of a hoarder. I buy everything that I think looks good, then forget I have it. Not great for the budget, but great for when I’m in the kitchen with cooking block!

  15. I love grocery shopping. It’s the same thing as a farmer’s market…well, not at all, but you know what I mean.

I eat the same thing for breakfast and lunch everyday. I like to have fun at dinnertime though!

  16. Sara

Aww, I feel for your grocery woes, I know I’m ultra spoiled with all the grocery stores I have around & our all-year farmer’s markets (I live in San Diego). I completely agree with you about loading things on the belt in a certain order!! My boyfriend used to think I was crazy but he does it too, now πŸ˜›

  17. I TOTALLY hear you on the lack of good “regular” grocery stores in the city. In G-Ho we have a smallish grocery store at 23rd & South, but it’s incredibly expensive…and the Grays Ferry Pathmark, which I’ll do in a pinch, but don’t like. I always go to Wegmans in Cherry Hill too!

There is another Wegmans another 10 minutes or so into Jersey, on Route 38 in Mt. Laurel – I go there when I do my Costco run, because they are in the same shopping center. Recently that Wegmans got a liquor store inside! As a native PA/NJ-ite, that was sheer incredible-ness to me.

  18. I love grocery shopping, but I get really annoyed when people take up the whole aisle. I also get market rage. πŸ˜‰ I also hate to push the cart.

  19. I hate the south philly grocery stores too…they are the absolute worst! I always go to Cherry Hill Weg’s, but I don’t get a lot of fruit/veggies there because of my weekly CSA share. I’m gonna go crazy once November hits and their season’s over. I might shed actual tears haha. Wegman’s brand products are pretty good quality – better than any other store brand items I’ve seen around Philly for sure (other than Whole Paycheck) πŸ™‚

@Krista (kristastes), I don’t mind Wegman’s brand, I just hate that they don’t also offer the name brand for some items (certain shapes of pasta, etc). Which CSA do you belong to? We want to join one for next year.

      • @RhodeyGirlTests, Gotcha! I always get stuck in the vortex of their natural foods aisles and never make it to the weg’s brand pasta section hehe.

I belong to Landisdale Farm’s organic CSA share (both fruit & veggies). I split a medium size share with my 2 friends and it works out perfectly. I just visited the farm recently and I like the fact that all items come from one farm. Lancaster Farm Fresh is another one I hear is good and I believe that one is a combo of a few different farms – my cousin as well as Lauren/Eric of goodbye tex have shares with them. I think you would love either for sure. Lancaster has an extension for winter that my cuz told me about I can let you know the info when she sends it to me if you want!

  20. The fact that you mentioned Wegmans in your post just made me the happiest person in the world. I grew up with a Weggies 7min from my house…I literally spent every day there eating Seafood Pizza, Clam Chowder, the China Wok, EVERYTHINGGGG. Now I don’t have one…and I’m seriously depressed.

  21. I love grocery shopping πŸ™‚ And I understand your frustration with employees roughly handling your produce!

I’m also the person who nicely pushes away the high school football player volunteering to bag groceries. I have to do it myself!

  22. You are like my food shopping twin!! I thought I was the only blogger out there who would buy one veggie/fruit/snack and eat it through the week and one set of things to make my lunch of choice through the week. It saves money, time thinking about what to make for snacks/lunches, and wasted food. I do however plan my meals out in advance for our food budget. We do keep one or two nights open to just make what we feel like though.

We also only buy meat for about one to two meals per week and usually use only half the package for the entire meal then freeze the rest for use in a future week. Loved this post!

  23. I am the same! I love grocery shopping, always eat the same things over and over until I get bored and always have to load the conveyor belt in a certain order!

  24. I HATE how crowded Whole Foods is where I live. Sometimes I go to the one 20 minutes away, just so I don’t have to deal with the crowd and get grocery store rage.

  25. Oh I just love Wegmans, it’s were we shopped when we lived in Buffalo.

I tend to go pretty much all over Newport for our groceries. I can find a lot of good deals at the commissary on base, but I don’t really care for their meat and local and organic products are scarce.

I stop at Shaws, Stop & Shop, and also The Green Grocer which is a small health store that has grains in bulk. It’s very rare I make it to Whole foods or Trader Joe’s. I hate leaving the Island.

  26. I hear you on the conveyor belt and bagging produce pet peeves. Most of the time I try to bag it myself as they are scanning it so that I know it’s how I want it. Control issues? What control issues? πŸ˜‰

  27. Babycakes

okay I seriously am the same way about every single one of your grocery shopping quirks – I haaaaaaaate when the check out people man handle my produce – they’re always banging my carefully picked apples down on the scale and throwing them down to the end of the conveyer belt near the bags. There are definitely profanity laced thoughts running through my head. Glad I’m not alone πŸ™‚

  28. I thought I was peculiar for having market rage. Where I am, pretty much everything is by car (Manayunk) so I know that I will get most of my veggies from Maple Acres & then for regular groceries, depending on $$$ and time, it’s either Whole Foods or Super Fresh. I refuse to shop Genuardis after getting a couple cases of food poisoning from them. Now Wegmans – I adore that place but I’m always afraid that things are going to spoil if I get meat or dairy products due to the unpredictability of 76 πŸ™

    Thanks for sharing!

  29. I tend to stick with the same breakfast and lunches too! My dinners are always the most exciting.
