Crash Hot Potatoes
Crash hot potatoes are exactly what you want out of a potato side dish… they are crunchy on the outside, soft and creamy on the inside, and look gorgeous on a plate.
I have been testing a few recipes in preparation for this year’s Thanksgiving lunch. Last year I hosted Thanksgiving brunch, and lunch is a whole new game. I don’t know how I always get myself into these fun messes, but I need to somehow pal around with my dad all week, host lunch on Thanksgiving day for 8 people, and also have a few dishes prepared to bring over to my father in law’s Thanksgiving dinner. My palms are already sweating with nervousness. (That one was for you, Jon.)
Anyway, I have been contemplating the Thanksgiving potato. Do I make simple mashed potatoes? Colorful roasted baby potatoes? Crash hot potatoes, which I have been ogling for over two years?
I still don’t know.
What I do know is that testing recipes is really fun. I made a fantastic batch of 12 crash hot potatoes and proceeded to eat two of them right out of the oven. Even though I had just eaten lunch. And then I laid on the floor to try and get a good photo, but the potatoes were tempting me so much I had to abandon that and put them away for dinner later on.
By the way, my husband should never leave me alone in the kitchen for an entire day. I tested 6 recipes and left my kitchen covered in flour for almost 8 hours. And I dirtied all our kitchen towels and didn’t make the bed until he was practically walking in the door.
Woah.
This recipe belongs to Jill Dupleix, but I find The Pioneer Woman‘s version to be more beautiful to read. Either way, know that the variations are endless. I topped mine with a bit of kosher salt and oregano, and they were heavenly.
I am still unsure of the legality of putting someone else’s recipe on my own site, but here is the basic how to: Boil some small potatoes. Heat up your oven to a nice hot temp. Drizzle olive oil on a baking sheet and add the potatoes like you would cookies (leaving room between them). Press down with a potato masher, taking care not to break apart the potato completely. Add spices of your choice and then drizzle or brush on more olive oil. Bake until the edges are brown and the bottom is nice and crisp. Try not to eat the whole batch in one sitting.
People ask me all the time what my hobbies are. Aside from snowboarding and the occasional run, I would say that food is my hobby. I wake up thinking about breakfast, and in my spare time look at recipes and beautiful photos of food. I analyze every bite of a new recipe and mercilessly discuss it while my husband tries to ignore my food jabbering. I don’t let my husband leave for a work trip without a little care package of snacks complete with paper towel and drinks. I think about special dinner parties until the point of obsession, but just for fun. I create menus weeks in advance, which I recently learned is not really normal. Food is a fun hobby to have.
And crash hot potatoes are fun to eat.

I love crash potatoes! I have tried crash sweet potatoes too which are just as delicious.
I LOVE these!! I have made them before and they are everything I hoped they would be..
now I have to try Jessica’s version of SWEET… 😀
Ummm. Why have I never heard of crash potatoes? This needs to change ASAP!
Love PW’s crash hot taters! I have only made them once tho! Must. make. soon! 🙂
These look fabulous! I loveee everything the Pioneer Woman does 🙂 You can use any recipes on your site… it’s good manners to link and/or give credit. But as far as copyright, if you change just one thing, it’s fine. But it’s always good to give credit anyway!
i’ve never even heard of crash potatoes! sometimes it is so fun to have a marathon day of working in the kitchen, even it it does turn into a massive mess:-)
Yum! These look great!
I still only assist in the kitchen for Thanksgiving. One of these years I will get my act together like you. You’re inspiring with your party prep and cooking skills.
They look FABULOUS.
I’ve never heard of these! So want to try them. And dig into your Thanksgiving info. I’ve only been hosting a few years and am still pretty clueless! (PS re: sticks in the pizza pops… probably fine, but less stable to put the sticks in afterwards since they won’t be baked on, and riskier to the toppings. But might be worth it for the tray space!)
These look really great – I love that they’re very comfort food-ish and simple, yet they look special. I think my friends would like them because no matter how fancy I get with the food, they only ask me for recipes for things like this. What spices did you use on yours?
@Deena @ Libra Loves, I used kosher salt, pepper, and OREGANO! Yum.
I love that recipe! I’ve been making PW’s version for a while now. I love cracked pepper, kosher salt and fresh rosemary.
For Dan, since he doesn’t like Rosemary, I do fresh chives instead
oh and they are on our menu this week for Wed to go with the cheeseburger meatloaf recipe I am trying out 🙂
wait, why are they called “crash”? either way, i NEED them…i was just wondering 🙂
I was just looking at this recipe the other day, now I must make them! They look so delicious
I adore crash potatoes! I’m not in love with their name, but they are so delicious! One night recently for dinner I just ate crash potatoes and brown sugar glazed carrots. It was one of the best meals I’ve had in a long time!
These look fantastic! I’ve never heard of them before, but I’m definitely going to try them soon!
can’t wait to try these, I think they would be great with garlic. Then again this italian girl put garlic on everything, I loved when my friend told me she had never had garlic in her eggs and it was soo good. My dad was the one that got me started and hes not even italian(he likes to think he is) we get our pizza with extra garlic and we love it!
Am I the only one who hasnt heard of these before? Must try!
