A NY Kind of Weekend…
I had a weird weekend.
It was probably one of the most fun I’ve had in a long time, but also bizarre.
1.
My cab got into a cab accident. It was my driver’s fault. As I left my friend’s fabulous baby shower I snagged a cab to rush over to our hotel to surprise our friend for his 30th birthday. Two lanes were merging into one and my driver tried to cut off the other guy and ended up hitting him. Our cabs got stuck together and we skidded for a bit before hitting the side and stopping. I sat in shock for a minute or two while the two drivers got out and started cursing at one another. I kind of banged my knee and head and today I have a big bruise, but I am fine otherwise. After a few minutes I stepped out as did the couple in the other cab. My driver did not want to let me leave and I was alone and kind of scared. He insisted I pay for my ride so I threw $6 at him and scurried away with the other couple. We were on that road that crosses Central Park so we had to walk about a mile before any cab could stop and pick us up to go to our destinations. I said bye to the other couple and after waiting for about 10 minutes found a cab. I promised myself I wouldn’t cry, but when I got back to the hotel and saw PB and my friends I burst into tears. So embarrassing. Even more embarrassing is that I didn’t think to get his cab number or anything.
2.
The surprise 30th birthday night was lots of fun. After a dinner I can’t wait to share with you we all headed out for a drink. PB’s friend suggested they order whiskey and they did. When the bill came they realized they ordered one of the most expensive whiskeys on the menu at $56 a glass! It was a mistake we will not repeat. It was actually really funny and I took a picture of the receipt to remember it. Oh, and our sodas were $8 each. Only in NY…

PB was going to surprise me with an iPad for Christmas. He was checking out Craigslist and found a woman agreeing to sell hers for only $300. It was an iPad worth almost $1,000. He asked a bunch of questions and everything seemed to check out- even though the iPad would be coming from Italy. She said she would be using TNT and that he should send payment by Western Union transfer- no credit cards accepted. That’s when we knew it had to be BS. (Credit cards protect you from fraud but a straight Western Union transfer is just like cash and does not). Yesterday morning we googled her name and realized it is a huge scam. Luckily we realized it in time. Merry Christmas to us, hmpf!
I feel better now that I’ve shared the weirdness. Now I can’t wait to share the amazing meals we had in NYC.
What was the weirdest thing that happened to you this weekend?
oh my gosh! That cab accident is pure madness!!! I can’t say anything too odd happened to us this weekend. Glad you’re safe!
sabrina!! what is with you and weird cab rides??? so glad youre ok but that’s terrible. i would never have paid him (ok i probably would’ve been too scared to just run away, but still. the NERVE). glad everything worked out!
that is insane! so glad you’re okay. i hate when cabs play chicken with each other like that.
i just got my husband an iPad for Christmas – now I’m thinking it may have been a mistake since he’s been surgically attached to it ever since ๐
We’re glad you’re OK! My weekend was mundane in a good way. Lots of library and studying and not much else.
I’m glad you weren’t hurt in the accident! That was some quality whiskey…yum! Craigslist is almost all scams now. It stinks. Why can’t I just get a normal massage anymore? GEEZ!
OMG – poor you!!!!!!!!! Glad you realized it was a scam wtih the iPad. And the accident must have been so scary. I’m surprised that doesn’t happen more. I can’t believe that jerk made you pay for your ride!
So glad you are okay! What a crazy weekend?!
Wow, what a weekend. I can’t believe $56/glass!
@Marg, Yeah, it was kind of horrible considering we are trying to save money, but at least it makes for a funny story. The place in general was insanely overpriced!!!!!
Whoa, only in NYC, that’s for sure! I think you should have spent it in Newport instead ๐ That’s where the food, drink, and fun is flowing these days.
oh no! i’m so glad you’re OK, that’s a really scary thing to be involved in an accident like that ๐
weirdest thing this weekend? hmmm…i guess the fact that i DIDN’T fall while skiing was somewhat out of the ordinary ๐
Well, on the bright side you still had a beautiful weekend with your love and friend!
I’m so glad you are okay! Cab drivers are generally insane but those in NY take it to a whole other level. The $56/glass surprise would probably have made me cry then laugh afterward. Another reason why NYC is a fabulous place to visit but Philly is far superior ๐
I totally would have burst into tears as well.
Wow that is a lot of weirdness! Sorry to hear about your cab accident. I cannot believe he made you pay! He should have been lucky you didn’t ask for a trip to the hospital on his insurance.
I hear you on the iPad love. I’m getting one for xmas and I cannot wait. Nearly $1000 huh! That must be the one with a ton of GB’s!
Glad you were still able to have some fun.
I’ve been in a cab accident before too!! They all drive like absolute maniacs, so it’s no surprise that they get into accidents way more than people expect them to. And $56 for a glass of whiskey?? Your waiter must have loved you guys ๐
Glad you had a fun weekend regardless!!
Ahhh! Glad you’re okay! I was in a cab accident in Philly on Callowhill this summer. My cab t-boned a car that ran a red light…I had a banged up knee too, but that was it. We paid him, I actually felt really bad for the cabbie! These accidents must happen more frequently than we realize, especially since a lot of cab drivers are insanely risky when zipping around.
ah sorry to hear you got caught in the “whiskey trap”! My fiance always asks how much the whiskey is before he orders it since they do this allllll the time!
xoxo

I cannot believe he insisted you pay! There is so much that is wrong with that situation.
I would have been so shaken up after that ride! You poor thing. Glad it turned out OK, but I would have started crying as soon as I left the scene.
NY cab drivers really are nuts – glad you are ok though! I totally would have cried, no question.
Glad your car accident was not more serious. Sounds like a very eventful trip to New York. ๐
Holy moly! Id be in shock if I had a bill for a $56 glass of whiskey! Definitely memorable!
