17 Weeks: Big changes
Things are changing and fast it seems. All of a sudden I have turned into a true pregnant woman.
Let me explain…
In the last week I have tripped about 1,000 times. My normal klutzy count is only about 500, so this is news. My balance is just so off. I didn’t know it would happen this soon.
I’ve been exercising consistently, but like I mentioned last week, I’m slow as molasses. Actually, slower. I walked for almost an hour this weekend while PB and my cousin did sprints, and I was as tired as they were at the end of it. I even got sore muscles. Carrying a bit of extra weight and having increased blood volume really does affect you.
Here’s what Babycenter says about Bambino’s growth this week:
How your baby’s growing:
Your baby’s skeleton is changing from soft cartilage to bone, and the umbilical cord β her lifeline to the placenta β is growing stronger and thicker. Your baby weighs 5 ounces now (about as much as a turnip), and she’s around 5 inches long from head to bottom. She can move her joints, and her sweat glands are starting to develop.
And our baby is the size of an onion!
I think I may have, um, popped. I feel like I look huge compared to other weeks. It’s so crazy to see my body look so different from what I am used to seeing. We’ll know for sure if I’ve popped when I take my 18 week photo this weekend.
17 weeks:
And just for fun… 5 weeks, 11 weeks, 17 weeks (WOAH WHAT A DIFFERENCE!)
I forgot I used to look like that. Ha!
My hand is rubbing my belly like all the time. I never thought I’d be one of those people, but here I am rubbing my belly constantly. I don’t know how it started, but it feels so soothing and nice I can’t stop. I like to think of it as caressing my baby in utero. I know it looks weird, but I can’t stop.
I think I’m feeling kicks! I discuss it quite thoroughly in my latest Babycenter post… if you’ve had a baby let me know what you think! Are they kicks that I’m feeling?
I’m really starting to feel like there is a baby on the way. I know this feeling will be even greater when we find out the sex in 13 days… not that I’m counting or anything. Pregnancy is becoming so much more exciting!
My weight gain updates are going to be restricted to the doctor’s monthly weigh ins from now on since my daily weigh ins are all over the place. One day it looks like I’ve gained nothing this week, another day it looks like I’ve gained 2 lbs. I have no idea which is accurate. I’m doing my best to eat well but also indulge a bit, and I trust that my body will do what it needs to do. Whether it means I’m going to gain 25 or 45 lbs I don’t know, but as long as I grow a healthy baby that is what is important. I’m hungry every two hours and if I don’t eat I get a really bad headache and my nausea comes back. I’m taking that as my cue that I should eat every two hours. So I am.
Random facts of the week:
Items I’ve purchased for bambino this week: 1, but not what you’d expect! I bought us a handshower to replace our standard showerhead so that it will be easier to bathe him or her.
Items I’ve looked at online for bambino but have resisted buying: about 20. I’m holding out for some cute Gap baby onesies that I know have to show up soon. Last year there were so many cute ones but right now I feel like there are no super adorable ones. So I’m waiting. Impatiently.
Days until we find out the gender: 13
Days it feels like we have to wait to find out the gender: 100
Maternity clothes PB bought me this week: 3 items. One pair of long exercise/yoga/lounge pants, one pair of capri yoga pants, one funky black hooded short sleeve top. All from the outlets.
Maternity clothes I actually need: a lot more! I’m not comfortable in my clothes anymore and the feeling of the elastic on my waist is horrible. I need to keep hunting for cute things since it seems a lot of stuff is frumpy or super expensive.
Currently craving: watermelon and steamed veggies. And strawberry shortcake. And a hot dog, but since they gross me out I won’t be indulging in that craving. Oh and corn on the cob, which should be arriving any day now right?!
Time it took to write this post: 45 minutes because my pregnancy brain keeps getting distracted.

so cute girl!!! i am SO EXCITED for you!!!!!!
Totally agree – the stuff at Baby Gap right now (at least for boys) is not cute! Too many cutesy slogans and sayings, and not enough stripes and polo collars. π You look ADORABLE!
I just love reading about your weekly updates! I had to giggle at the “Days it feels like until we find out the gender” – my friend is in the same boat and she said it’s completely agonizing to have to wait!
So glad to see you’re doing well…well, besides the tripping π
It is amazing how everything impacts everyone SO differently. That is why I always say in my updates, this applies to me but could be 100% different for you! Glad you’re feeling good and able to eat (so important!). You look great. Isn’t it kind of fun to start looking pregnant/popped?? I am THRILLED for you to find out the sex! I can’t wait to hear. Now I want to go buy a hand connection for our baby bathroom shower too- great idea
You look great! I’ve definitely had weeks where I feel like I grew A TON and weeks where I feel like I hardly grew at all. Nice work listening to your body and eating often! I pretty much always eat every 3 hours or so and it hasn’t been any different during pregnancy. It’s a good habit to get into anyway! π
I have to admit I am terribly jealous of your work-from-home status because I wish I could be in yoga pants/capris. Since I’m in an office I had to give into maternity pants about 2 weeks ago – at 19 weeks. It’s a hard transition but once you give in it will be worth it! Nice job on the walking! I need to walk more.
You look fabulous! What an adorable little baby bump you’ve got goin’ on. I think I remember “popping” at about the same time. It’s SO FUN to walk around knowing that people know you’re preggo and not just fat.
SO EXCITING to find out the gender. Can’t wait to hear. I’m going to guess girl π Do you have a preference or gut feeling?
@Kate (This Place is Now a Home), Thanks!!
I feel like it’s a boy, but only because I had one dream where I was holding one. I am not really confident in that feeling. I’m not sure if I have a preference really! Either way will be cute and fun!
You look gorgeous!!! Your bump is so adorable. π It is so interesting to read about all the changes you are experiencing. Oh, and I’m such a sucker for baby gap stuff…I can do some major damage in that store.
Looking gorgeous in all the pictures!
Looking great! And, I’ve never been able to guess weight gain. The weeks you feel skinny end up being huge, and vice verse. I’ll bet boy, though, based on the scientific “your face is still skinny” method.
You realy look amazing! Can’t wait to find out if it is a boy or girl:-)
You look fabulous! Know what’s funny? I rub my belly ALL the time, too. I catch myself doing it when I don’t even mean to. So funny!
I can’t wait to hear the results from your BIG ultrasound- SO exciting!
So cute! It’s exciting to see the changes from week to week.
Don’t worry about your weight–I gained steadily and then some weeks later on in my third trimester I didn’t gain at all! Then I felt nausea later on in my pregnancy and actually lost a few pounds.
motherhood maternity make yoga pants that you can fold down when you are small, but can cover your baby later. I have three pairs because they look good with everything and never look cheap or crummy. I used to wear their other maternity pants, but at 34 weeks, they are the most comfortable and I no longer care! Another great buy is from H&M–they have cotton maxi dresses for $17 that I still wear today! They are super comfortable and since they aren’t maternity you can wear them post-baby!
Enjoy your little belly–because when it gets big—the fun is over!!! π
I wrote “cover your baby”—ha ha! I meant “belly!”
You are looking amazing!
You look great!!! I love reading these updates!
You have popped!!
Looking good Sabrina! I totally agree with just weighing in monthly at the doc – you’ll drive yourself crazy, otherwise. And even though you’re winded now, the nice thing is that goes away as soon as the baby comes! I was afraid I’d be wheezy for life but it really disappears.
You have popped and you look so adorable! I’m sending you a recipe for an amazing Strawberry Bavarian cake.
You look fabulous! π I’m gonna throw out my gender prediction: I’m feeling a boy!!
I love your baby bump!! It is adorable. It’s hard to believe your body can change that much. It is even more surreal because you have a real life growing inside of you. ahhh
I’m laughing about the watermelon- last summer I was craving it so badly that I thought it was a good idea to buy a whole one, not realizing just how much that was. Someone told me it was my body’s way of staying hydrated and I am proud to say I ate most of it!
You look great!
You look adorable with your very apparent bump:) When ever I’d rub my own belly while pregnant, I always felt as though I was giving the baby a little massage. And now both of my kids {4 & 6} ask me for massages. Not sure if it’s from all the belly rubbing or they just turned out like their mama:)
@Nancy~the wife of a dairyman, I like that idea! Baby massage!
you look fabulous!!! Oh, you just wait… give it a couple more weeks and you’ll be like… WHAT??? i thought I had a belly at week 15 – and totally didn’t.. π
I love that we were gchatting when you felt your first kick. I definitely think that’s what you’re feeling!
@Chelsea, I hope hope hope so! I keep feeling it every now and then (although only once today grrr) and I hope I start to feel them more!
You look beautiful!! I am SO excited for you, and love reading your updates!
You look fantastic! Your baby bump is adorable.
You are absolutely adorable! As for maternity clothes, I had good luck at consignment stores in my area. I’m sure Philly would have some good ones.
And I’m sure you’re feeling movement – it started off as gentle nudging for me at first but right around 21 weeks I felt my first good, hard kick. You’ll know the difference.
You look amazing. Nothing feels better than rubbing your preggo belly knowing that your little baby is growing inside of there. The older my son gets the more I miss being pregnant and having a little baby. Enjoy it because it all goes so quick!
I started to feel my baby’s movement really late. I remember it felt like a little butterfly fluttering around. As the pregnancy goes on you will most likely feel movement when you lay in bed at night. My gender prediction is that it’s a girl.
<3
also, your hair looks fantastic . i know you got that cut a while ago, but I just love it!
You look so adorable! As a fellow native Rhode Islander I’m so glad I found your blog!
You look great and so, so happy π
I love these updates and am a little surprised at the balance deal as a pregnancy symptom. I trip so much as it is I don’t even want to imagine myself as a clumsier pregnant version- I’ll need to live in a bubble or something.
