27 Weeks: The good, the bad, & the ugly
This week marks the last week of the second trimester. I can’t believe it! Everyone keeps telling me to just wait and see how awful the third trimester is, but I’m actually looking forward to it. Each day is a step closer to meeting bambino.
Not only is our baby practicing sucking and swallowing and developing his little lungs like crazy, but he was even in his first wedding this weekend! Family of 2.5:
My belly is out and about so much now. I love it. Here is my 27 week belly pic:
Not much bigger than 25 weeks right?
But much, much bigger than week 20! (I think weeks 20-25 were the biggest jump in belly changes)
And definitely bigger than week 16.
How about week 6? I remember thinking I was already showing and everyone would know I was pregnant. I had no idea what I was in for!
I got so big out of nowhere and I love it! My belly finally sticks out beyond my newly massive chest.
Oh, and look at how long my hair got! I just hope it grows a lot more in the next 3 months. I miss my long hair. Perhaps products like supplements for hair growth can be utilized.

Here is what Babycenter says about 27 weeks:
How your baby’s growing:
This week, your baby weighs almost 2 pounds (like a head of cauliflower) and is about 14 1/2 inches long with her legs extended. She’s sleeping and waking at regular intervals, opening and closing her eyes, and perhaps even sucking her fingers. With more brain tissue developing, your baby’s brain is very active now. While her lungs are still immature, they would be capable of functioning โ with a lot of medical help โ if she were to be born now. Chalk up any tiny rhythmic movements you may be feeling to a case of baby hiccups, which may be common from now on. Each episode usually lasts only a few moments, and they don’t bother her, so just relax and enjoy the tickle.
See what your baby looks like this week.
Bambino is the size of an eggplant! PB’s favorite!
*The Good
I made it to my best friend’s wedding! You’ll understand more once you get to the ugly, but I am very thankful that my doctor is my doctor and that he happened to be at the hospital when we visited last week.
I passed my glucose intolerance test!
This test rules out gestational diabetes. The drink was gross, but the hour wait was lovely. One of the women from my childbirth class was there too so we chatted and got to know one another while we waited. I also had the best vampire ever who took my blood so efficiently I barely felt the butterfly.
I only know I passed the test because it was on the copy of my records I got that same day. I haven’t discussed it with the doctor yet, but from the number I know I most definitely passed. I’m so happy to have that off my mind.
Oh, and for those wondering, I ate a normal breakfast before leaving. My doctor didn’t say to fast so I didn’t. I actually had a bowl of super sugary Life cereal.
I feel pretty! I am rotating the same 5-7 outfits each time I go out, but I don’t mind at all. My bump is bumpalicious, my skin finally looks like normal again, and my hair is growing out. The scale is also slowing down to a rate of about 1 lb a week instead of 1.25-2 lbs/week. I really think that my body just needed to gain a lot of weight in the second trimester and that it will slow down in the upcoming one. I hope I don’t have to eat my words in a couple of months.
*The Bad
There isn’t anything bad except for the ugly, but I love the movie reference. When my brother and I went to Italy one time as kids we stayed with my nonna for about 4 days while my parents traveled a bit. My nonna only had one movie on VHS- The Good, The Bad, & The Ugly. My brother and I ate bowls of cherries until our tummies hurt while watching that movie over and over again. Speaking of nonna, I am thrilled that she just arrived from Italy! We will see her this weekend. I can’t wait. File under the good.
*The Ugly
I went to the hospital twice last week. You can read all about the drama here. I had to delay my trip out to Indiana for Lynne’s wedding by two days, and only got to go by luck and good timing. While there I couldn’t dance and had to keep my feet up as much as possible, but I was there and that is all that mattered to me. I cried enough that I had to go two days later than planned, and I can’t imagine how upset I would have been if I hadn’t been able to attend.
The end result of the two hospital visits is that I need to play princess a lot more and just take it easy. I need to be off my feet as much as possible. I was right in thinking I needed to slow down, but I didn’t listen to myself. I’m listening now.
My IV from the hospital left a big nasty bruise on my arm. It still hurts. I don’t want to get into it too much, but I’m just going to say that I hope I can avoid an IV during labor.
Random Facts of the Week
Weight gained: I think about 1 lb, but I’m unsure since I didn’t weigh in on my normal day.
Overall weight gained: 24 lbs? 23 lbs? I’m on track to gain 35 I think. Not terrible, and definitely not avoidable.
Current cravings: Over the weekend I NEEDED chocolate. I mean, I needed it or my life would just be ruined! That was the first time that happened to me. PB bought me a small Godiva milk chocolate and almond bar for $4 from the hotel lobby store to satisfy the craving. It tasted like heaven. Then today I had a serious craving for a Rybread grilled cheese (again). We are trying to save money on food but I got it anyway. It hit the spot. I’m also still craving anything simple that has been cooked for me. I’m getting lazy.
Pregnancy symptoms I currently hate: My sense of smell. Perfume or perfumed lotions drive me crazy. My sense of taste. I can taste… too much? I don’t know if that makes sense, but lots of meals that used to taste amazing don’t taste good anymore. I have become much more critical of my cooking and of restaurant meals and I wish I could go back to a less intense sense of taste. My inability to get comfortable in bed. Despite taking over 90% of the bed with my fortress of pillows, I’m still not comfortable.
Pregnancy symptoms I currently love: My belly. I love my belly so much. I find myself rubbing it absentmindedly all the time and I love it. Bambino’s kicks. He is kicking stronger and harder these days. Today PB came really close to my belly and talked to him. The baby kicked him in reply! It was so exciting.
Other random symptoms: Serious heartburn. I mean, nonstop heartburn! I don’t mind because like I’ve said before, hopefully our baby will have lots of hair. Nesting. I am totally a mama bird right now getting her nest ready. I want everything to be perfect for our little boy. Tears. I’ve been a lot more emotional lately and I cry with good news, bad news, commercials, sentimental moments…basically all the time.
Days I’ve waddled this week: 3-4. It is just easier sometimes than trying so hard to walk normally. It is pretty hilarious.
Today I am thankful that:
I’m not in pre-term labor.
My brother is figuring out a way for me to work efficiently from my laptop.
I can (or rather, will be able to once my brother figures it out) work while keeping my feet up.
Bambino is healthy and growing strong.
I have an incredibly supportive husband and family.
I attended my best friend’s wedding.
We have a great obstetrician who trusts me to follow his orders.
I passed my GD test.
My mom is clearly watching over bambino and I.
T-88 days to bambino’s arrival!

i’m glad you’re feeling OK and you look amazing! just glowing ๐
You looked so beautiful at the wedding, I love that pink dress! Glad everything is going well for the most part!
You look GORGEOUS girl!!! ๐
You look stunning up there with PB! So glad you were able to make it to your best friend’s wedding!
You are simply GLOWING! That’s crazy how much your sense of taste and smell have changed!!! I think chocolate and grilled cheese sounds fabulous… anyday!
You’ve “popped”! So cute!
You looked beautiful at the wedding and that picture of PB kissing your belly is precious.
Hooray for testing the GD test! The liquid wasn’t as nasty as I thought it was going to be…but it certainly wasn’t tasty haha. Very sorry to hear about your hospital trips- but Im super glad you’re feeling better and were able to make it to the wedding (you looked so pretty!). Hang in there! For the record, I don’t feel any different in the third trimester than I did in the second!
Bumpalicious! I am sorry about the baby drama. I am sure everything will be okay!
Sabrina, you and that bump are absolutely beautiful! I don’t know why anybody feels the need to tell you how “bad” things are going to be in the upcoming future. I know you’ll take each day as it comes and do the best you can with it:-).
88 days is crazy!
Personally, I loved the third tri. I felt fully pregnant, Lucy moved like crazy and I didn’t feel truly terrible until the week or two before she was born. Insomnia and constipation were the only downsides. Enjoy every moment of these 88 days…and I’m so glad you’re ok!
You looked GORGEOUS at that wedding!! Glad you’re doing well and that you were able to make the big day!
Boo for the ugly ๐ I remember what a mess I was at 35 weeks when that happened to me! I can’t imagine 27 weeks. Be a princess chickadee and let people wait on you. It all goes away soon enough and you wait on someone else nonstop for 18+ years ๐
Looking good! I love the little blocks you have to document the weeks. So cute!
Glad everyone is healthy and happy!
You are glowing!! I love that belly-kiss picture of you two. Perfect and definitely frame worthy!
EEsh – now I’m getting nervous about the GD test. I didn’t realize it happened later. I thought you found out way earlier. Now, I’m nervous.
@Susan (Oliepants), Don’t be nervous because there is nothing you can really do to prevent it, so if you have it you have it. They do it typically around 28 weeks I think.
Hi Sabrina! Its so exciting to follow your progress.
I remember whenever my doctor felt that my belly was hard she had me take Buscopan (in Italy) not sure what it is sold under in the US, other than that I remember Magnesium is good at keeping contractions away. I used to take supplements that I mixed with water.
This is a good time to relax and really enjoy these last few months. Get pampered, get a massage, float in a pool all day, do all the things that you will not have time for later. I mean it in a good way. Once the baby comes, it’s all about him, so enjoy the “you” time while you can!
I am SO thrilled and excited for you, I’ve been reading since the very beginning ๐ You are glowing and look absolutely beautiful. You’re going to be an amazing mom!
I’m glad you and the little one are ok! How scary!
Don’t worry, I don’t think the third trimester is all that bad. I mean yeah, a few more aches and pains and of course a much bigger belly, but I’m (luckily) still feeling pretty darn awesome and I only have two weeks until my due date!
You. Look. AMAZING.
I went to a friend’s wedding on my due date. I was Jai Normus.
I gained 70 pounds when I was pregnant with Gigi.
Did I mention you look amazing????
So glad everything is ok. You look adorable, especially in that pink dress! The silliest things gave me heartburn when I was pregnant. I still remember eating a banana and feeling like my chest was on fire.
That is wonderful news that you were not in pre-term labor and that you are doing okay!
You are more beautiful and radiant than ever!
you look gorgeous girl! ๐
Sabrina, you DO look fabulous! Pregnancy definitely agrees with you!
On my first pregnancy, I was SO careful about what I ate and how much of it and gained 40 pounds.
On my second pregnancy, I ate what I wanted, still healthy but also had a cheeseburger now and again and ice cream when I felt like it and gained 40 pounds.
The best part of the weight gain is you lose 20 lbs the few days after delivery:) Losing a lot of water weight right away, sure felt good:)
So glad to hear you’re totally enjoying your pregnancy!
Oh Sabrina you looked beautiful in that pink dress!
Wonderful news about the GD test! You look awesome in that pink dress! I anticipate your next update. -Kristie
Love the pink dress! I gained lots of weight for both pregnancies – about 60 for my first (boy) and then maybe 50 for my second (girl) – I weighed more when I got pregnant the second time due to a foot surgery I had. I lost all of it and am actually back to my pre-wedding weight. Got prego on honeymoon so it wasn’t that long ago. lol. DO NOT worry about the weight coming off, it totally will.
Sabrina,
you look absolutely beautiful!!! Definitely take advantage of this time to rest because you and the baby need it and it will be SO much harder for you to be able to do that after delivery. So, eat it up, girl!
Being pregnant can be extremely nerve-wracking with worry and all the things that we’re “supposed” to do to keep ourselves and our baby healthy – it’s a wonder they don’t come out needing valium to bring them to an even keel. Yet, it’s all normal.
Relax, put your feet up and just blog some more!
You look AMAZING!!
Love those count-down (or up I guess?) blocks you have ๐
You look like a pregnant princess in that pink dress!! I love it! I’m glad to hear everything is ok! I’m sure it must be so hard to stay off your feet, I know it would be hard for me! You look amazing!
