The Birth Story: Part 1 of 2
I am really proud of my birth story. I had prepared for a natural unmedicated birth and even had a birth plan, and while it didn’t go the way as planned, it really could not have been a better experience. Here is my story.
On Thursday morning I started having contractions around 4 am. I wasn’t 100% sure it was the real thing, but like Beth told me it would- it definitely felt different. By around 9 AM I had been spotting a bit and contracting regularly so we knew it was the real thing. We let our parents know so my dad could start making his arrangements to come from RI. I was having contractions every 5-10 minutes and managed them by sitting on the ball hunched over with my head on the couch. I also took a bath which felt really good.
At lunchtime I had been in labor for a solid 8 hours. I had eaten an english muffin with peanut butter and banana, an apple, 2 scrambled eggs, a slice of toast, and a grilled cheese from 4 am until then. We decided it was time to head to the hospital as I was starting to get pretty uncomfortable. When we got to the hospital I thought I would be already 4-5 cm but I was only 2-3 cm and almost completely effaced. What a disappointment after all that work! They gave us the option to labor for an hour and see if I made progress or to go home and come back later. The idea of getting back in the car and going home was torture, so we opted to stay and labor. The nurse told me the best position to dilate a bit more quickly is to stand and rock my hips back and forth. So that’s what we did for an hour. I stood the whole time and Trig pressed on my back during each contraction. I was bossy about him pressing as hard as he could. It provided much needed relief. I also told myself to relax my face and just focus on opening up. When they checked me again I had gone from 3 cm to 5 CM with a bulging bag. We were admitted and so excited over our good work!

my best friend had the same thing happen but they decided to labor at home. i’m 100% certain your birth story is much more encouraging though…hers ended in an emergency c-section, the baby was born dead and then revived, and she’s still (3 months later) going through a lot of pain with her stitches! i’ll be glad to hear yours so that when i go in february i’m not totally terrified 🙂
Aren’t the checks the worst? Nothing like working your tail off for hours to hear ‘no progress’ 😛
Can’t wait to hear the rest!!
I am in suspense!! Wonderful story so far. How hard to feel the disappointment of not being completely dilated.
I can’t wait to hear the rest! Thank you for being so honest with your birth story! My goal for December is to go natural too, but I know things don’t always progress as planned. But all that matters is the healthy baby at the end, of course 🙂
I love it!!! I am looking forward to hearing the rest!!! I did have my water broken….excited to see what happened!
Oh and I have no idea why I never did the baby center blog before. Instead of using my blog for those questions…I’ve had an account! Answered your Q today. And you totally inspired me to use that platform more!!!
I can’t wait to hear the rest of your story! It must have been so frustrating to not be dialated enough after all of that work you did.
I love that you opened this story saying how proud you are of your birth story. Looking forward to part II!
so excited to read the rest!!
I’m looking forward to reading the rest! I also LOVED the tub!
I read your article on BC but it kept freezing before I could comment. Nursing in public the first time is scary! With long sleeves I lift up my shirt. I swear by my maternity tank tops under then that I can pull down along with my nursing bra. That way my belly isn’t exposed. Also, Hooter Hider. I know you said you’re not really into them, but they are so convenient and have prevented flashing for me. I’m glad nursing is going well!
Okay, I can’t wait to read part II because like you I’m going to try to do an unmedicated birth at the hospital.
Love that you’re sharing this! You know we tried for no meds too and I’m still a little sad about how we felt forced to medicate. I’m so glad that you’re happy with the way everything turned out and can’t wait to read the rest!!
I’m glad overall it was a good experience for you and I look forward to hearing the rest. You are already my hero 🙂
Ugh, I went home in between with no progress. GRR! Your story is sounding great so far!!! Can’t wait.
Oh. My. Gawd. You’re killing me over here! I can’t even imagine going 6 hours without any progress. You’re definitely making me nervous for my own labor! (My SIL was telling me yesterday that she was having contractions 15 minutes apart for 4 DAYS before she actually had our niece. Scary stuff…) Can’t wait to hear the rest!
So cool that you are proud of your birth story! I love that! Excited to read part two.
Hello. Sabrina Congrats on the lil one. I followed you throughout your whole pregnancy reading all your blogs each week. It really encouraged me and helped me through my pregnancy. My baby girl Giuliana was born 9-9-2011. She was due 9-30-11 but came at 37wks. I am so excited to keep reading your blog! Our babies are only weeks away so it helps to read about another mom going through some of the struggles and having the same questions you have. Good luck with your lil one! I will keep reading!!!
My birth didn’t go according to plan either, but the point is….we did it, and rocked it! Can’t wait for part two!
Congrats on your baby!
Nice post, I’d like to add that… It is important that you diversify your investments as much as you can. Remember the old saying: do not put all your eggs in the same basket. Instead of buying a quantity of stocks from the same company, look for other investments. However, you should also learn when to strengthen your positions when you find a great investment.
That is very attention-grabbing, You’re an overly professional blogger. I’ve joined your rss feed and look ahead
