Review: The Skip Hop Playspot Mat (2 years later)
We’ve had the Skip Hop Playspot Mat for almost 2 years now, so I thought I’d check back in and let you know how we like it.
Here’s what we like:
1. It is far more attractive and less childlike than many of the other foam mats on the market. It looks good in our living room.
2. I love that the design allows you to change the look and shape of the mat based on your needs. We actually have two of these mats and use about half the tiles of the second mat in addition to the original mat. However, when Raffi was crawling and not yet walking I had both mats fully out as one large mat since we needed more crawling space. Crawling on hardwoods is not fun.
3. Because the mat has so many interlocking pieces, it has become a giant puzzle for Raffi. He loves taking pieces out and putting them back in.
I do have a couple of things I strongly dislike. Here they are:
1. The abundance of different pieces makes it difficult to clean. I have to take apart the whole mat and wash each individual piece. That means about 60 different pieces just for one mat! The grooves also make it difficult to clean. I have to really scrub to get the light colors back to their original state.
2. The foam is weak – if someone steps on it in heels they leave permanent dents in the mat. In the same regard, certain toys can’t be placed there or they will leave marks.
Overall I like this mat and am happy we have it. It is one of the baby items I never thought I needed but it in the end has proven to be extremely useful.

I’ve considered buying a foam mat, but ultimately the hardwood floors didn’t seem to bother our son at all so I skipped it. Glad you’ve enjoyed yours!
I think the mat is just as much for me as for him! I hated sitting directly on the hardwoods before we had the mat.
Can you tell me what you do during the day that your daughter sleeps through the night?? I am trying sooo hard to get my daughter to do it! I bought the swaddle you recommended and she loves it,,,but still only sleeps 3 3 1/2 hours. Any suggestions would be great!
Hello- I love my hop skip mat too, the cleaning aspect is irritating though! Have you ever tried to put them in the dishwasher to short cut the process?! X
I haven’t, and in fact I finally gave it away because I couldn’t take the cleaning part anymore!
