Which gym should I join?
I miss my old Gold’s Gym in RI. I miss Maria’s step classes and kickboxing and making friends and getting in a great workout. I’m so bored with my Insanity videos and runs. Obviously my life is different now as a married woman with two children, but I’d love to fit gym classes back into my life. I have two gym options and I can’t decide which to join. Help?
Gym A:
Pros:
– great classes
– right next to my favorite market
– has babysitting service that I can use for Ali if I want to work out while R’s in school
– really like the instructors
Cons:
– It’s a 10 minute drive away
– Because I have to drive, I won’t be able to go in the snow
– Expensive (because of the babysitting)
Gym B:
Pros:
– great classes
– good price
– walking distance (10 minute walk)
– would make friends in my neighborhood
Cons:
– hard to get into classes. Classes open up 24 hours before and they fill almost immediately.
– no babysitting so I’d have to go when Trig can be home or during my workday. Not sure how feasible that is for the long term
– unfamiliar with the instructors
Thoughts? I’m leaning toward gym A, but I feel like I have to give gym B a fair chance since it’s so close to my house.

I think I know your Gym A and I used to belong to that chain. Mine was always a walk away but other than the drive, I think that’s your best bet. The childcare option is kind of a huge perk nowadays (says my now gym membership-less, suburbia dwelling self.)
I cant be of much help with what gym to choose but you should check out Lithe. Its fun, fast paced, and their old city location i think has child care.
Hi Zeina! I used to love Lithe, but I’m looking for something a little different right now. Thanks for suggesting it!
Gym A. I was stuck in the same predicament and chose the gym with child care. I am now able to go whenever I want. Plus knowing the gym has great instructors means you will enjoy and want to go to the classes.
Why can’t you drive in the snow?
I can and would for the market or something important, but I wouldn’t for the gym. I got into a bad car accident in college driving to the gym in a blizzard and swore I would never make that same mistake again.
Sounds like A for the win. You won’t walk 10 minutes in the snow to gym B, you’ll limit yourself even more with gym B with no child care (doesn’t sound like a mama friendly gym!) and the inability to get into the classes you want just sounds like instant frustration!
Gym A!!! You’re much more likely to go. I promise!
As a mom, totally Gym A. You’ll definitely more and you won’t have to rely on anyone else.
Gym A, no question!
Have you checked out Unite Fitness in Center City? Their workouts are awesome and I am pretty sure they have babysitting!
Sabrina chose………… Gym A!!!!!!!
It was great to see you in class today. I heard you asked if I was still an instructor.
Totally did and I’m so stoked about it.
10 minutes is not that far of a drive and I think it will be more of a motivator for you. You will drive the 10 minutes there and want to make it more worth your while. FYI, I live around the Philly area as well as the Farmer’s Almanac predicts another bad winter like last year. Sucks, I know. I have a 2 month old.
This has nothing to do with your post, but I was wondering if you could share what type of play kitchen you ended up doing for your kids? I remember you doing a post about it on Babycenter a while back, but was curious what you ultimately ended up with. My son is about to turn 2 and I love the PB Kids set, too, but am hesitant to shell out that much money for it. Just wondering whether you’re happy with your final choice and whether you’d recommend it. Thanks!
HI Kathy! We ended up with the PBK retro kitchen (fridge, sink, oven). We’ve been very happy with it. The kids use it daily, almost 9 months later. I like having the 3 pieces because it allows them to play together without fighting, but I think we would also have been fine with the 3 in 1 retro kitchen. The quality on the PBK set is not great though. It chips very easily, and even a drop of water causes the finish to bubble. It seems to be hit or miss with the quality as some other people I know have sets 5 years old that still look brand new. Good luck deciding! Oh, and every once in a long while it goes on sale. It’s worth waiting for the sale!
Thank you – that’s all really helpful to know!
You’re welcome. My friend whose set looks brand new told me she sprayed it with a water resistant protection when she first got it. I think I may try that too!
