Greetings everyone…from the winner of the RhodeyGirl Tests Christmas Cookie Contest. Incidentally, that Cranberry Bar recipe is tasty year-round. 🙂
Rhodeygirl was kind enough to offer me a space to post about my upcoming marathon, which I’m running in support of The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS).
The idea of the program, called Team in Training, is that I raise money for LLS while their volunteer coaches train me and the others in my group to run a marathon (26.2 miles) this April, in lovely Champaign, IL. I’ve been considering this for quite awhile and think that, on a number of levels, this is a great way to spend some of my time. The real push to do this was when a friend of my partner (I kind of hate that word, but boyfriend seems a little lame after 5 years, right?) and mine recently lost his mom to non-Hodgkins lymphoma. It was a reminder of how lucky I am that my folks and my family are still w/ me. Since I couldn’t go to the funeral (it was in RI and I’m here in IL) I thought this would be a nice tribute to him and his family. Of course the motivation isn’t all altruistic. In addition to raising money for a cause that does important work, I’m simultaneously getting off butt and out of my own head. I’m currently working on my PhD, so the bulk of my time is spent on academic pursuits, and while I love it, I also want to actually *do* something that isn’t thinking / writing / worrying.

Also I’ve been keeping track of my progress on that page too, so you can get a sense of just how incredibly slow I actually am! 😉 Before signing up for this event the most I’d ever run was 4 miles. Ha!
