Fat Salmon Sushi
Fat Salmon Sushi... in PHILADELPHIA!
In Rhode Island, I had my sushi spot. Haruki in Cranston (newly remodeled with the help of tools on this page) is great for a quick sushi dinner and even better for takeout, and Haruki East in Providence is great for a nicer sushi dinner with friends.
Finding a new sushi spot has proven difficult. No one seems to know where the great sushi is! Randomly, when I was last in Rhode Island, I met someone in a bar Rhodey style. He was a friend of a friend, and since we are the smallest little state, obviously knew some of my friends as I did his. Anyway, he lives in Philly now too and let me in on a little secret… Fat Salmon Sushi!
I couldn’t wait to go there. Every time I didn’t feel like cooking I suggested it to PB, who preferred just staying in to a home cooked dinner. We finally had the chance to go though, and it was worth the wait.
Pros:
-cute decor
-fun area to walk around
-good food
-the Lava roll. It was so unique and different and FUN. (See bottom right of photo above)
Cons:
-slow service
-tables very close to each other (we could hear everyone else’s conversations!)
-they don’t chop up the fish (At Haruki they chop the fish very small before making the roll- here they were big chunks)
Philly friends- any other good sushi spots?
In other news, PB and I are leaving for Jordan in exactly TWO WEEKS! I can’t believe that this big trip is already upon us, and with it comes our one year anniversary (July 25). This has been a most fabulous year (especially after we figured out how to live together HA) and I can’t wait to share so many more with him. Our trip to Jordan is going to be amazing, and we are going with a group of 15 or so friends and family from Philly and more. I can’t wait. I will be blogging from there, so get ready for some insanity.
In other other news, PB stands for PhillyBoy for you new readers! Not Peanut Butter, not Princeton Boy, but PhillyBoy! How did that nickname start? To be honest, when we were first dating I was setting up a Gmail label for all of his emails to be tagged with, and I was paranoid that if I named them with his name he would see it one day and freak. Meanwhile, just having a label for him in general after 2 weeks of dating is crazy. I am loco.
HAPPY QUARTER OF A CENTURY JENNA!
Wait you got married on my birthday? Why don’t I remember that? Ha! And that sushi looks so good! I miss it : (
@Pupfiction, Ummmm because I actually got married on July 25! WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME! I should know my own anniversary, whoops!
CAUGHT!
I LOVE discovering new restaurants…and I am always game for a new sushi place. My favorite in the area is Mikado, over the bridge in Jersey — I haven’t found a solid go-to place in the city yet. Definitely need to try Fat Salmon!
Vic Sushi, at 21st and Sansom. It’s tiny (like 5 seats total tiny) so I wouldn’t necessarily recommend eating in, but for take out it’s the best. They have a 3-roll combo deal for $11 and everything is super fresh and tasty. (And they do brown rice sushi for a small upcharge.)
@Shelby, I was totally going to recommend Vic Sushi! It’s my favorite place to grab some sushi for lunch… not only is it cheap but it is SO FRESH!
If you ever venture out to the Main Line, SushiLand in Bryn Mawr is totally awesome. They have tons of special rolls, it’s BYOB, and it’s an awesome deal!! Decor isn’t very swanky (mostly caters to the Villanova crowd), but the sushi is SO. GOOD.
RAW!!!!! (I think it’s 12th and Sansom) The 4 of us should go there soon!!!
Haru is amazing (so so good) and so is Pod. I’ve heard amazing things about Kisso Sushi as well!
Yum…sushi! LOVE IT!!

I’m a happy girl if I can eat sushi at least once/week. I can’t wait to read about your trip to Jordan – how cool!
This might be kind of a trek for you, but there’s a restaurant in Norristown (not in the shady part) called Minado that has GREAT sushi. It’s a buffet, but I hate even saying that because while it’s buffet style, the food is not typical gross buffet type food. There’s a HUGE selection and it’s all really fresh and great tasting. Definitely worth checking out!
I like Minado, too. The food has always been fresh and they have delicious salads. Sushi can be expensive, so I love the freedom and variety of a buffet.
Oh my, I need sushi after reading this! Those rolls look so packed full with goodness! I hate dinky sushi rolls. The only thing I wish is that more places would serve brown rice sushi rolls. They need to get with the program! 🙂
Can’t wait to see highlights of your Jordan trip. Have a great weekend!
HARU. Hands down. 2nd and chestnut
this serves as a great reminder that i need to get some sushi in my belly soon! YUM!
Try either Zento, 2nd & Chestnut in Old City or Mixx in Chinatown, 10th & Arch (get the special rolls if you go there – they change all the time)
Fat Salmon is one of the best sushi places I have tried in Philly, have you tried the roll with salsa on top?
And we have the same wedding anniversary day, congrats to you and PB 🙂 can’t wait to see pictures of Jordan, the last time I went to visit I was 7 years old, so i’m sure things have changed greatly since them!
I vote for Vic as a takeout option bc of how tiny it is. Sweet potato roll is tops. Zama has an incredible sushi bar with 3 guys manning it – check it out if you’re in Rittenhouse.
I am getting married tomorrow and for some reason I am in my hotel room reading your blog bc I can’t sleep!
Anyway, PB is such an awesome abbreviation (i call mine Mr. Vedge which just needs to go).
I can never eat too much sushi, looks like a great place to eat.
my absolute favorite place for sushi in philly is RAW! the outside deck is amazing – especially this time of year.
That sushi looks amazing!
I’m also stopping by to say: True Blood starts again tonight!! Are you caught up? I’m so flipping excited!! I knew you would understand.
@Lindsey @ Eat, Read, Run, THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS COMMENT!!! I am caught up and now I know to watch! Thanks for letting me know0 I can’t wait!!!!!
