Fall in a Bowl
Happy Saturday morning!
Today is a quintessential fall day. It is chilly but sunny, and the wind is just strong enough to have a small stream of falling leaves as you walk on by. I am snuggled up on our new chaise with a hot mug of tea and a cozy blanket, planning out my day. The perfect fall day commands the perfect fall bowl of oatmeal. This is only the second time we’ve made oatmeal this past year, and I forgot how warm and satisfying it is.
I love adding hazelnuts to everything. They are an undervalued nut. Whole hazelnuts remind me of my 8 months in Italy where I would truck over to Mercato Centrale for some raisins and nuts and sometimes even dried apples. My favorite combo was raw hazelnuts with the plumpest raisins from the guy right at the top of the stairs. We were there so often that he knew us by name!
Anyway, what is your plan for the day? I am excited to go on a bike ride as PhillyBoy’s support team for his 20 mile run and then shower and scuttle off to the mall to shop for next weekend! And then tonight my hubby and I have a fun date planned! It is really going to be a perfect fall weekend.
I love my life and I love living in Philadelphia with my PhillyBoy. I also love hazelnuts. A lot.
Fall Oatmeal
Serves 1-2, depending on your appetite
Ingredients:
1/2 cup oats
2.5 cups water
1/2 ripe banana, sliced
1/4 cup dried cranberries (we used sweetened because that’s all we had on hand)
pinch salt
pinch cinnamon
raw hazelnuts and walnuts to taste
Directions:
Heat the water in a small pot over medium high heat. Add the salt, cinnamon, and banana. When the water comes to a boil add the oats and dried cranberries and bring the heat down to medium, stirring often. When the oats have soaked up all the water taste to see if they are cooked through. If not add some more water until you reach the right consistency. Top with as many hazelnuts and walnuts as you’d like and enjoy!
I don’t think I have ever eaten a whole hazelnut? I know I’ve have them chopped in other things, but never just tried a whole one by itself. Maybe I will get one today to try. 🙂
Sounds like a great day 🙂 And a perfect bowl of oats to start it off! Josh is a major hazelnut fan as well. Plan for the day- started it off with a walk, quick trip to Whole Foods, ironing, going for a second walk with the man ;), carving my pumpkins, making granola for my Dad & lots of college football!
Good luck to PB on his 20 miler! I had my last one yesterday (hence the pasta making I showed you last night!). Enjoy your day!
I don’t think I’ve ever had a hazelnut that wasn’t hidden in a piece of chocolate! I’ll have to pick some up soon.
That is almost my favourite go to bowl of oatmeal. Mine is oats, a grated apple, dried cranberries and walnuts. I believe I will have that for breakfast today!
My day involves carving pumkpins with my boyfriend and his nephews, getting my skates sharpened and getting some last minute details for my halloween costume.
Hope your 20 mile ride (and PB’s run) go well!!
LOVE hazelnuts! they scream fall to me…so good!
Hazelnuts are a nut I NEVER think to go for… good call!
Have a fun weekend! I hope you’re enjoying your new furniture!
Hazelnuts are wonderful!! I’ll bet that was a fantastic bowl of fall.
Have fun on your ride! 🙂
Now THAT is a bowl of oatmeal!! It looks delicious with the hazelnuts included. Sounds like some great plans for a weekend day! Have fun:)
