Night Market Philly
Night Market Philly is The Food Trust’s creation of an evening filled with drinks, music, and food from the best food trucks in Philly.
PB and I decided that while we still live in the city we want to take advantage of it, so when we heard about Night Market Philly we knew we had to go- shout out to S for telling us about it! We showed up and the weather was hot, the lines long, and the music loud. It was awesome. We gulped water, chatted with our new friends while waiting in line, and finally strategized. We decided the best way to enjoy the event was to split up, get some food from separate lines, and then meet back up to eat and enjoy. My line at the Nomad pizza truck was really long, but I chatted with the mom in front of me about LifeFactory bottles and with the college kids behind me about which food trucks are the best.
It was heaven for a foodie! That was the scene too- parents with kids, hipsters, college kids, and a few randoms thrown in to really spice up the night.
The Nomad pizza was really good. It is amazing that it is made on a truck. It was quite expensive at $9 for a whole, but because the flavors were so rich a half pizza was enough for each of us. I really enjoyed the presentation and that they use high quality ingredients such as San Marzano tomatoes.
As I shoved doughy, cheesy pizza in my mouth while balancing my water, camera, and purse I sauntered over to PB in The Dapper Dog line. His line was a lot shorter but it took a lot longer to fill each order. He had the #1 for $5 which was with dijon mustard, coleslaw, and tomato slices on a hot dog. I didn’t try it but he said it was good. In PB language that means it was satisfactory but nothing special.
About 10 seconds after he took his first bite, we saw the thunder clouds roll in. And then the wind picked up and tents went flying. And then it starting raining. It was just a gentle but large raindrop rain, so when everyone started leaving we looked at one another with excitement… SHORTER LINES! We never mind a little rain, especially in return for delicious food, so we decided to stick it out.
I really wanted a cookie ice cream sandwich from Jimmy’s Cupcakes, but they ran out! We quickly moved to the next line, the Burger Busz, but decided we (ahem, I) really wanted dessert. I am kicking myself now because my friend told me they had the most phenomenal burger ever. I hunted it down at 13th and Norris though and plan to attack when the next burger craving hits.
We were walking over to the next truck to check it out when we saw this guy. For the sake of this blog I totally sold myself out and asked for a photo. Everyone says he is so friendly but I didn’t get that vibe as he shouted “Dudes, I’m wearing electronics I’ve got to GO” in kind of a nasty voice. Sorry man, how should we know? I was just trying to stalk you and take your picture…
After the failed picture opp the weather suddenly turned and it started pouring. I mean, wind whipping, soak-through-your-clothes-in-10-seconds pouring. It was literally like someone pouring buckets of water on us. PB kindly asked me 1,000 times if I just wanted to leave, but since we were soaked we figured we might as well wait and grab a nutella/banana crepe to enjoy at home. I loved the crepe truck and unfortunately don’t know the name of it as I was too concerned with my soaked dress and ruined hair. I can be so vain! When we got our order (one of the last since they couldn’t work much longer with the rain coming IN the truck from the wind) we rushed for shelter. We asked some random kid to take an iPhone pic to remember how crazy we are:
PB bravely hopped back out into the monsoon to hail a cab, which surprisingly stopped for us. We hopped in and giggled all the way home.
I love my husband. I love date night. I love Night Market Philly.
LOL @ Duff. Sounds like such a fun time even if it did rain on you!
What a cool idea!!!!!!! I love that y’all stayed through the rain too. The pizza looks amazing!!! mmm to fresh moz! Bummer that Duff was such a jerk!
Can I just say that I love that you said you ‘hunted it down’. Totally my style when it comes to food! LOL 🙂
That’s kind of upsetting to hear about Duff! I was just at JHU for work and realized the building I was going to was literally right across the street from Charm City Cakes! Of course I got a pic of the outside but there was a big sign saying no walk-ins unless you had an appointment. I guess they’ve gotten a little too famous after the show.
That is awesome! I had no idea that was going on. I would have totally went! I’ve never been to a food truck. Sorry that Duff was a jerk. He doesn’t seem like he would be nice in person.
I was at Night Market too! I wanted to try the Nomad pizza so bad, but after a 35 minute wait in the beer line (which was warm and flat) I gave up. So sad I put my beverage before my food. Shame on me 🙂
Looks like an absolutely fabulous date night. I love that you stayed even though you were soaked from the rain:-).
Looks like so much fun, what a great date night!
Looks like so much fun, what a great date night!
Looks like you guys had such a fun night, it’s such a treat that your last few months as a family are during the summer months!
@Stacy R., Thank you SO much for saying that. So many people have said it to us as such a negative thing- “oh, you have to go through THE WHOLE SUMMER? It’s going to be HORRIBLE!” But we think it will be awesome. SO thanks!!!
This sounds like such a special and memorable date night! You look glowing and beautiful and I love your dress! I live outside of Philly, (KOP) and had no idea about this cool event. I’d love to check it out sometime- thanks for sharing! 🙂
first time commenter–just had to stop and say YOU LOOK SO GREAT! Such a glow.
I saw Duff do a demo once. He didn’t seem too friendly afterwards, especially compared to Paula. But it’s cool you got a picture with him!
You will have so many great memories from this night! Such fun!
rock those pregnancy boobs!! lol I went up at least 2 cup sizes from my original when pregnancy both times!
What a fun time, even with the rain! Foodie heaven = perfect night!
That’s Duff right??I was at an event in late 2009 that he was at and he was a complete jerk. Really not a fan of his!
Ohh I totally saw you there – but wasn’t entirely sure if it was you, and got awkward and didn’t say hello. You may have seen me turning around to creepily stare at you from time to time in the pizza line. That night was so much fun – I just wish the apocalyptic rainstorm had held off and not scared me away.
@Claire, Next time say hi! I just met some of The Food Trust people at Taste of the Nation and they promise there will be another one.. but are keeping the date a secret for now! That pizza was really good, wasn’t it??
Sounds like such a fun night. Too bad the rain got serious and Duff wasn’t friendlier, but the food sounds great!
