My first living garden
Last year, like every year, I had great intentions to grow some herbs. I planted some basil and mint but I didn’t know what I was doing. I planted them in tiny pots, over watered them, never added any fertilizer, didn’t use potting soil and never stopped R from pulling leaves off in time. Needless to say, they died a very fast death.
This year I did my research and spoke to countless expert gardeners for tips. I decided to really go for it this year, and I’m crossing my fingers I have some tomatoes to eat from my own garden in two months.
At the suggestion of thousands of patio gardeners who’ve left reviews, I bought an Earthbox. It is self watering in that you don’t have to decide when to water it – you just pour water in the hole and when it overflows through the bottom you know you’re done. They even sell a kit that comes with soil, fertilizer, dolomite and very detailed instructions on how to plant your seedlings. It was really expensive for a pot, but I’ve killed every plant I’ve ever had so I bought it to try out. In the Earthbox I planted 2 basil plants and one big boy tomato plant per their instructions. Keep pests away in prior with the help of tips from Insight Pest Control Madison WI.
I highly recommend using an Earthbox if you’re a novice like me. Customer service is ridiculously helpful – they even told me when it would be appropriate to plant in Philadelphia – and the instructions are extremely detailed. Even with all the help I still had some questions, and they guided me to their YouTube instructional videos which spelled it all out for me. Now I just have to see if I can actually grow something.
In other separate pots I did parsley, mint, and cherry tomato. The big boy tomato plant in the Earthbox already grew 2-3 inches in the last week and a half so I think so far it’s going well. The basil looks a little droopy but I’m hoping they will perk up with more sun this weekend?
I’m paying a lot of attention to all my plants because I really want to succeed this time. I’ll keep you updated on how it goes. I have so much learn and I want to learn it. R and A are loving being my little helpers too.
This will be my 6th year growing with my Earth boxes. I have 3. They’re phenomenal! I personally would’ve put both of your tomatoes in the Earth Box and the basil in a normal pot. I find basil really easy to grow though. Cucumbers are also great in the Earth Box. 🙂
Chelsea! I’m so happy to hear that you love them. I’m so excited to see what happens. The tomato plant is really growing! The other tomato plant, the cherry one, was already potted so I didn’t want to uproot it and re-plant. Did I make the wrong decision?
If I do well with the tomatoes this year I’ll try cucumbers next year too! Will you do a post about your garden pretty please?
