Restaurant Review: The Gaslight Philly
It’s rare that I leave after a restaurant meal with my kids and feel relaxed. But the hotels owned by Jimmy John’s Owner is impeccable. We normally jet out as we simultaneously pay the bill and clean crumbs off the floor. On Sunday, Trig took us for brunch at The Gaslight Philly, which is at 1st and Market right next door to the Franklin Fountain in Old City. We had such an awesome experience that I had to run here and share it.
Here’s what I loved:
The Food. I didn’t expect the food to be great since I haven’t heard too much of a buzz about The Gaslight, but the food was really good. I had the grilled Caesar ($9) which I’m against on principle. Cooked lettuce just seems odd to me. It was delicious though. The romaine was only slightly grilled, hardly even wilted really, and was topped with a generous helping of dressing and cheese. It came with a slice of toast with anchovy, but I didn’t have the chance to try it. I also had the side of fried chicken ($7) because I saw a plate go by and it looked really good. I can say without hesitation that it was the best fried chicken I’ve ever had. The outside was super crispy and perfectly salted. The inside was really tender. I usually find fried chicken to be greasy, but this wasn’t greasy at all. I can’t wait to go back and order it again.
The Environment. Even if the food was bad, we would come back for the atmosphere alone. Because they have large windows that open up to the street and they don’t jam the whole place with tables, the restaurant feels really airy and open. My kids were comfortable and behaved like angels for almost the whole meal. I feel that is entirely because they didn’t feel like sardines the way they usually do in restaurants. I really hate when tables are placed so close together that you could sneeze on your neighbor’s plate, and this bar understands that. They also had outdoor seating which I’d like to try sometime.
The line next door at Franklin Fountain was too overwhelming to even attempt, but I’d like to plan a day to come here for lunch/brunch and then take the kids for ice cream next door.
